The 3-Day Ausangate Trek is perfect for experienced hikers who crave adventure but have limited time. This trek takes you through the heart of the Andes, crossing three mountain passes, walking among freely roaming alpacas and llamas, and traversing beautifully diverse landscapes that change daily—from snow-capped peaks to neon red desert mountains and lush, swampy pampas. The ultimate reward is reaching the hidden Seven-Colored Mountain, a stunning natural wonder resembling a rainbow that will leave you in awe.
Throughout the 3-Day Ausangate Trek, you’ll encounter a variety of wildlife, including condors, alpacas, vizcachas, Andean geese, vicuñas, wildcats, and even pumas. Our campsites offer incredible views of Ausangate from different angles, and you’ll have the chance to soak in hot springs on the first day while marveling at the rainbow mountains. The Seven-Colored Mountain is undoubtedly the most breathtaking sight you’ll see in Peru!
Itinerary 3-Day Ausangate Trek with Rainbow Mountain
DAY 1: Cusco – Ocongate – Tinki – Upis
We’ll pick you up from your hotel in Cusco at 5:00 AM and drive privately for about two hours to Tinki. Here, you can stretch your legs, see locals in traditional attire, and visit the local market if it’s open. Next, we’ll continue driving for approximately one hour on a bumpy, dusty road to Upis Pampa. After breakfast, our skilled arrieros (porters) will organize the group’s gear and prepare the horses for our hike.
We’ll start walking through agricultural communities, enjoying spectacular views of the mountains for around three hours before stopping for lunch. After lunch, we hike another two hours to reach the Upis Camp (4,320 meters). Along the way, you’ll witness the stunning Nevado de Ausangate and interact with local farmers in their traditional outfits. Once at the camp, we’ll have the chance to walk to Upis Lake or take a dip in the nearby hot springs. Afterward, enjoy dinner and watch the sunset reflect off the snowy Ausangate from our cabins.

DAY 2: Upis – Arapa Pass – Pucacocha – Ananta
We’ll wake up early around 5:00 AM with traditional coca mate or coffee in our cabins, followed by breakfast. Our hike begins, passing by local alpaca herders and the snowy Ausangate to your left, surrounded by rich flora and fauna. If lucky, you might spot condors, chinchillas, and vicuñas.
We’ll enjoy the colorful Pucacocha Lagoon and reach Paso Arapa (4,989 meters / 16,567 feet). The trek continues to Pucacocha, where we’ll have lunch at our company’s own dining area right in front of the lagoons. After lunch and a quick photo break, we hike to our second camp, Ananta (4,700 meters / 15,400 feet), setting up tents in cozy huts.

DAY 3: Ananta – Rainbow Mountain – Red Valley – Cusco
Today’s adventure starts early at 3:45 AM with breakfast before a steep ascent to Paso Ananta (4,500 meters / 14,800 feet). From here, you’ll see the incredible Rainbow Mountain in the distance. We descend to a small lagoon before making our way uphill to the Seven-Colored Mountain, offering a 360-degree view to fully immerse yourself in the stunning surroundings.
After soaking in the views, we hike down to the Red Valley for about 30 minutes before heading to Quesiuno for lunch. Our private transport will then take you back to Cusco, arriving around 4:00 PM.
